Monday saw the official start of the General and Local Elections in Crawley and, as I announced last February, I won’t be seeking re-election as borough councillor for Ifield.
I’m incredibly proud to have represented Ifield and Bewbush as a councillor on Crawley Borough Council and West Sussex County Council and what we’ve achieved together, from environmental improvements in Ifield and Bewbush to securing an increase in GP capacity from the NHS, as the council’s Cabinet Member for Community Engagement.
On Thursday 7th May, I will instead be standing as the Labour candidate for Parliament and I believe that with the scale of the challenges we face as a town and a country, it’s right that I now focus wholeheartedly on winning for Crawley.
Last week, Mr Smith set out the reasons why he’s running for Parliament, so let me now set out why I’ve decided to put myself forward.
I’m running for Parliament because I’m concerned about the future of our NHS. Unlike some, I won’t promise a new hospital and then fail to deliver, but through tackling tax avoidance and implementing a mansion tax we can provide the NHS with the funds it needs to rescue it from crisis and safeguard it from privatisation.
I’m running for Parliament because while David Cameron pledged no child in a junior or infant school would be in a class size of over 30, since 2010 Crawley’s schools have seen a 260% rise in the number of pupils in oversized classes. We’re told that there’s no more money for education but the Government feels free to waste millions on Free Schools, set up on the cuff and without qualified teachers.
I’m running for Parliament because while the Tories cut a Crawley fire engine, made every local retained firefighter redundant and failed to plan for the care homes we need to give elderly residents the support they need in old age, we’ve had no voice on the national-level pleading our case.
We face serious challenges ahead and Crawley needs a voice that will speak up for the town and not just a party.
