Ed Miliband has announced the next step in our plan to control immigration by driving out the exploitative practices that drive down wages and drive up low skill migration.
Britain will only succeed in the future if we work together to root out employment practices that drive down wages – and if we do more to champion integration in our communities.
Labour will make it illegal for employers to undercut wages by exploiting workers. We will ban recruitment agencies from hiring solely from overseas. And today we announce we will establish a special Home Office Enforcement Unit with more than 100 staff to root out the illegal exploitation which undercuts wages and conditions for local workers.
We will also champion integration in our communities and public services by ensuring all NHS staff have good standards of English so they can care better for patients.
The Tories have broken their promises on immigration. In 2010, David Cameron promised “no ifs, no buts” that the Tories would bring net migration down to the “tens of thousands”. In fact net migration has risen to almost treble that level; latest figures show it has reached 298,000.
