It is an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Gossops Green as their councillor. Gossops Green has a great community, with many of the residents actively involved in local organisations such as the Community Forum and groups based around our church at St Albans.
The most exciting event in Gossops Green this year was the Christmas Festival, lit up by an enormous Christmas Tree, second only to the one in Queens Square. Hundreds of local residents came out to enjoy the Lantern Parade, Christmas Market, wonderful school choirs, carols and of course mulled wine and mince pies. It was great that councillors were able to support the event through funding from the County Local Committee.
Since 2014 I have been responsible for the provision of leisure and culture services in Crawley which, since the services’ merger with the council’s heath remit, now form part of the Wellbeing portfolio. This role involves overseeing the town’s parks (including Tilgate Park and Goffs Park), The Hawth, K2 and Community Arts.
Finding ways to enhance the health and wellbeing of Crawley’s residents is a large responsibility, and one that I really enjoy. The staff based at K2 and the Town Hall must be congratulated for all the excellent work they do, advising on diet and exercise, and pressing the NHS for the services the town needs.
In the future I’d like to see this work as a much larger part of what the council does, not only helping to deal with people’s physical needs but also reaching out to help those dealing with a mental illness.
Only now are we realising the scale of the impact mental illness has on our society, affecting all age groups. As a local politician I have a responsibility to help and assist the people that I represent, whether it be their day-to-day needs or working to secure in the help they need. That can be very difficult to deal with but every success bring a huge amount of satisfaction and I plan to go on helping people for as long as I can.
