Key Workers pay Freeze!
Key Workers pay Freeze!

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s public sector freeze is set to hit every key worker in Crawley earning over £18,000 with a real-terms pay cut next year.

This includes 166,122 key workers in our region, the teachers, police officers and Armed Forces personnel who have served on the front line in the battle against Covid-19.

At the Spending Review on 25 November, the Chancellor announced a ‘pay freeze’ for all public sector workers earning above £24,000 in 2021-22. NHS workers weren’t included, while those earning less than £24,000 were promised “a fixed increase of £250”.

Over the next year that means every non-NHS public sector worker earning over £18,000 in Crawley will see a real-terms pay cut next year. In our region, this means pay cut for:

  • 15,829 police officers
  • 79,778 teachers
  • 32,365 civil servants, including tax inspectors, prison officers and probation officers
  • 38,150 members of the Armed Forces

On top of the pay freeze, the Spending Review also contained a one-billion-pound council tax bombshell hidden in the small print and a cut to Universal Credit that will hit those who can least afford it. This triple hammer blow to people’s pockets is totally irresponsible when the economy is so fragile. Making people struggle to make ends meet will pull spending out of local high streets and small businesses, damaging consumer confidence at the very moment the Government should be building it up.

Cllr Peter Lamb, Leader of Crawley Borough Council, said:

“After a decade of cuts, public sector workers were already incredibly stretched trying to maintain local services with far fewer members of staff. Yet, over recent months, they have gone above and beyond call of duty doing everything they possibly could to help the UK through the pandemic. The Chancellor’s decision is a slap in the face of those who have done the most for our communities. The Government must reconsider their decision.”
