Founder Black Tie Affair Crawley
This is a Charity group formed to celebrate and share the Portuguese Culture within the community. We are a group focusing on sharing our Culture to the people of Crawley and beyond! We plan events where everyone is welcome to come feel, touch, taste and smell all the beautiful wonders of the Portuguese Heritage/tradition has to offer.
We are different because we aim at bringing community cohesion and welcome anyone who wants to be part of a society in which the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued. Founded in just a couple of months, we have already received such positive feedback from everyone who has gotten to know this group and our aims. Former Member of the Steering group
A voluntary group established in 2009 with the purpose of providing the Portuguese community with services, activities and promote cultural events.
In terms of a personal note, I think what would stand out is what drove me to get involved.
Having moved from Cardiff to Crawley, I had experienced many difficult issues in so little time just to get settled in.
This made me think about the residents that had lived here most of their lives and their problems. I wanted to make a difference.
It started with the issues of finding affordable housing in Crawley. Then once that was sorted, I couldn’t get my children into a catchment school. This was not even about finding the best school, it was simply getting them into a school at a reasonable distance to home. then they were all separated. So all three girls were enrolled in three different schools, at opposite ends of Crawley. The distance from home was less than two miles so the that meant transportation would not be provided. As you might imagine, it was extremely stressful to get the girls to three different schools on time, as this was impossible, not to mention disruptive to the girls and the schools. Through my struggle, I have discovered many parents in the same or similar situation and it is completely unacceptable.
