Crawley’s Mayor Cllr Carlos Portal-Castro opened the new petanque court on Friday 26th October. He was joined by Handcross petanque society and Cllr Chris Mullins, the Cabinet member for Wellbeing who has been the major proponent of this new scheme. It is hoped that people will make use of the petanque court which is free to use and open to all. Balls can be purchased from Decathlon for £20.
Cllr Chris Mullins said: “Labour in Crawley has always been about provision. It is an ambition of mine whilst in this Cabinet position to provide great recreational facilities. Petanque is a sport open to all and free to play, it is a good healthy outdoor game, in which all people can participate, I feel sure this facility will be much appreciated by the community. ”
Speaking at the event Cllr Peter Smith said: “We had some push-back from certain people when Cllr Chris Mullins originally proposed a petanque court in Crawley. But he listened to the comments and took them on board with the result that we now have a new low cost court available to the public and adjacent to car parking and the Downsman bowls club. We hope that Crawley people will get involved and join the petanque league.”
