On Thursday evening, Crawley Council Leader Peter Lamb was joined by Labour Peer, Baroness Smith of Basildon and local supporters to launch his campaign for the general election on 12 December.
Introducing Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate, former MP, Baroness Smith spoke with passion about the importance of this election, about the challenges of Brexit and the devastating impact of Tory austerity. She talked about the need to get out there and make the case for good Labour candidates like Peter and for Labour in general to win the coming election.
Speaking to the meeting, Peter said; “Crawley is my home, I grew up here, I went to school here, so I really want the best for our town. Like everyone else, I hate politicians not delivering on promises. Our current MP has been elected three times on a promise to deliver a new hospital for Crawley yet there is not one record in Hansard of him raising the issue at Westminster. The constituency is just half an hour from London and yet Henry claims an allowance to maintain a second home.
“I have a track record as Leader of Crawley Council that when I make a promise, I keep it and I claim very few expenses, the record is there to see.
“I’ve worked hard to protect our most vulnerable groups from the impact of Tory austerity cuts which have seen Crawley lose its entire grant. I’ve made sure we balanced the books, protected front line services and ensured the town continues to grow and move forward.
“Under the Conservatives, our local NHS has gone into financial ‘special measures’, our headteachers have been forced to march on Downing Street to demand the funding they need, nearly one third of Crawley’s children are now growing up in poverty and the reduction in police officers has seen a wave of drugs and violence spilling out into our neighbourhoods and town centre.
“I don’t believe that’s what most of us really want for Crawley. Things can be different; things can be better, and they must be. I’m asking the people of Crawley to vote for me, Peter Lamb on 12 December to deliver the brighter future that Crawley deserves.”
