We are living in an era of severe financial stress, a cost of living crisis unprecedented in the modern era made much worse by the soaring rise in energy prices and recent Tory national Government’s disastrous budget decisions.

We cannot, morally, stand by and do nothing.  And we won’t.  Next week, Crawley Borough Council’s Labour Cabinet will discuss the setting up of six “Winter Warmers” – in community centres in Bewbush, Broadfield, Furnace Green, Ifield West, Langley Green and Tilgate.

They will be there to help residents in the areas that need it most who cannot afford to heat their homes, or are just looking at ways to reduce their bills.

Winter Warmers would provide warm, comfortable spaces for residents to visit. At least two venues, usually more than this, would be open every weekday during the cold winter months for 18 weeks between Monday 28 November until 31 March 2023 and at least one at weekends.

Opening hours would vary but some centres will be open between 9am and 9pm.

Visitors to these spaces will be able to spend time in a heated location and have access to free hot drinks. They will also be able to receive advice on the cost of living and wellbeing.

Even if this will allow residents to stay warm for a few hours to save paying for their heating at home during that time, it could result in significant savings over time.

The council will also work with the voluntary and charitable sector to provide support. I should give an honourable mention to the Church and the Charis Centre in West Green that will be providing many hours, themselves.

In addition, both of West Sussex County Council’s libraries in Crawley will be open to visit.

We are a council that will not let anyone get left behind.  I believe that this is one of the most extensive provisions of support of any nearby comparable council and our officers have risen admirably to the challenge.
