There’s an inevitability, aside from taxes, and that’s death.  This can be an enormously painful experience both emotionally and physically for both the person concerned and their families.

That’s why the role of hospices is so important and a deeply emotive one.  It can make the world of difference to so many, relieve suffering and provide emotional support for those left behind.

I had the honour of recently visiting with the Mayor of Crawley the new modern facilities at St Catherine’s at Woodgate near Pease Pottage to see them first hand.

While I was sad to see the hospice leave Malthouse Road, Crawley Borough Council is also working with St Catherine’s Hospice on the redevelopment of their old site to provide important extra care accommodation for local residents who need it.

Following recent announcements, I know many were concerned to learn of the financial challenges St Catherine’s is facing and the difficult decisions they are having to take.  Hospice costs are increasing (like a good deal else in the voluntary and public sector) by well above inflation and there’s little to prevent it.

The move to new premises by St Catherine’s was in part to expand their facilities to meet increased need in coming years. I understand the hospice was encouraged by health partners to make this move, to reflect the aging population but the funding has not followed.  The impact is a retraction of a service we were told needed to expand.

There is a need to create a short-term support plan to stem the flow of cuts and a commitment to long-term reform that makes sure everyone gets the end of life care they need, when and where they need it.

I have supported Crawley’s MP Peter Lamb raising the issue with health ministers and with the NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board and we will continue to work to try to secure the funding St Catherine’s Hospice desperately needs.

In the meantime, hospices have always been part funded by public donations, I know some may well wish to give something and they can do so online at: https://www.stch.org.uk/donate/
