Millions of tenants across the country are set to benefit from safer homes as Awaab’s Law officially comes into force. This landmark legislation is a lasting tribute to the tragic death of toddler Awaab Ishak in 2020, whose life was cut short by dangerous levels of damp and mould in his social home. His parents’ courageous campaign has now ensured that tenants’ safety is finally put first.
For too long, tenants have suffered in unfit homes. Awaab’s Law introduces new, decisive protections. Social landlords will now be forced to urgently fix dangerous homes, with emergency hazards requiring attention within 24 hours. Landlords must also consider the specific circumstances of tenants, including young children, those with disabilities, or health conditions, who may be particularly at risk.
If a home cannot be made safe within the required timeframes, alternative accommodation must be offered. With the introduction of Awaab’s Law, the Government is aiming to send a clear message that no tenant should have to live with dangerous damp, mould, or other hazards.
This is a vital step forward in protecting tenants in social housing and resetting the relationship between tenant and landlord. Tenant safety is equally crucial in the private rented sector, and the Labour Government is committed to extending Awaab’s Law through the Renters’ Rights Bill, making housing safe and decent for everyone.
Peter Lamb, Labour MP for Crawley said:
“No one should be forced to live in housing unfit for human habitation. The passage of Awaab’s Law is a vital step towards in that every property is rented in an acceptable condition and I look forward to working with the Government to achieving the further steps required along this road.”
