Peter Smith represented Ifield and Ifield West from May 2012 until May 2022 – 10 years. During this period he was Cabinet member for Planning and Economic development for eight years from 2014 to 2022 and Deputy Leader of the Council

On 5th May 2022 Peter Smith will be the candidate for Maidenbower ward.

Peter Smith was elected to Crawley Borough Council for Ifield and Ifield West ward, in May 2012 and re-elected in May 2016 and May 2019.

Peter has lived in Crawley since 1978 having previously lived in Reigate and Horley, as well.  Both of Peter’s children were born in Crawley hospital and went to school at Hazelwick.  Peter worked for thirty years in information technology and was most recently an IT project manager at the headquarters of a major international airline in Crawley.  He has previously worked in senior IT positions at a global shipping company and has experience of working overseas, having lived and worked in the United States, Canada and Europe, as well as running large projects and working at senior management level.  He feels that this experience equips him well for his role as a Councillor in Crawley.

Peter has always been an environmentalist and was active in the Crawley Friends of the Earth during the 1970′s and 1980′s.  In recent years he has worked as a sustainable transport campaigner for Cycling UK (the National cyclists organisation – formerly the CTC) and has successfully resurrected the Crawley Cycle Forum as well as being Vice-Chair of West Sussex cycle forum.  He is interested in seeing improvements to our streets by the planting of more trees across the town and to encouraging residents to improve their home insulation and use of renewable energies.  Crawley Borough Council should take a lead in this, by reviewing and improving it’s own energy consumption and purchasing strategy, as well as by fitting solar PV panels on all public buildings, community centres etc.  Peter is delighted that since taking control of Crawley Borough Council in 2014 the Labour administration has made good progress with all of these objectives.

Peter is currently the Cabinet member for Planning and Economic Development and also sits on the Planning committee. He is the council appointed Director on Manor Royal Business District board.

Peter’s other interests include supporting Lewis Hamilton for Formula 1 world champion and Chris Froome / Geraint Thomas for winner of the Tour de France!  He also enjoys real ale, nice wine and good dining, on occasion.
